The Jota was developed from the 3C by Roger and Richard Slater during the winter of 1973. By changing camshafts, pistons, exhaust system and other details they produced more power. The 180 Jota proved an immediate success on the racetrack in the hands of Pete PK Davies and went on to win the Avon Championship in his capable hands several times during the 1970s. The Jota was produced for many countries in various states of tune. For example, in the United States the engine was increased to 1200cc. The bike was little changed over the following years until 1982 when the Jota 120 was launched. The new engine produced a little more power, but the main difference was the firing sequence which smoothed out the legendary vibration. After riding the 120 nearly every journalist put it on his wanted list. To quote Bike 120 percent Pure Motorcycle. A limited number of this version was produced which proved a sales success. However, on the racetrack it was not liked because of its weight and relatively low top speed of 140mph. The last version produced was badged RGA Jota. This was a cross between the successful RGS tourer and the high performance RGS Corsa engines. However, it never really achieved the same cult status as the earlier 180 or 120, both of which are seen as muscle bikes and are eagerly sought by enthusiasts.
