It is fitting that in the fiftieth year of the Honda Motor Company that this Gold Portfolio has been produced to celebrate the magnificent CBX 1000. It is now twenty years since the CBX was launched on an unsuspecting public. As the most powerful production bike of its day, it is still considered to be one of the greatest motorcycles ever produced by Honda. Praise indeed as the total production did not exceed twenty-five thousand units for all the four models built between 1978 and 1982. The CBX was the brainchild of Soichiro Irimajiri who, in the mix-sixties, produced the impressive six-cylinder racing 250cc and 297cc machines ridden by Mike Hailwood to win World Championships in 1966 and 1967. The first prototypes of the CBX were ridden by western journalists at the Honda test track at Suzuka, Japan, in November 1977. One of the first production machines was ridden by the Chief Travelling Marshall at the TT races in June 1978 on the Isle of man. The basic engine layout follows that of the racing six although the cams are chain driven rather than gear driven as in the racing bikes. With double overhead cams, 1047cc, four valves per cylinder and 105bhp the CBX was the first totally standard road-going motorcycle to exceed 100bhp in standard trim available to the general public. In 1979 the A model changed its colour to red and when introduced into the American market emission controls reduced the power to 98bhp. The only major change came with the introduction of the CBX 1000B when it developed into a sports tourer and was de-tuned to a claimed 100bhp. The final C model was introduced in 1982 with the introduction of a pillion grab rail. Still an enthusiasts bike these machines are much sought after, especially the more powerful, and rarer, Z and A models. It is still considered to be one of the greatest motorcycles ever produced by Honda. A collection of 29 articles covering Honda's high performance cruiser. Road & comparison tests, model intros, servicing & engine rebuild. Models covered: CBX Super Sport, Z, A, B, C & Moto Martin. 172 pages, 250 illus. SB.
